What's the difference between an accountant and a chartered accountant?
Anyone in the UK can call themselves an accountant. Chartered accountants belong to a professional body such as ICAEW, ICAS or ACCA, which sets exams, rules and complaints processes. Every firm offering accountancy services must also be supervised for anti-money-laundering, either by a professional body or by HMRC.
Do I need an accountant or a bookkeeper?
A bookkeeper keeps your records up to date: sales, expenses, bank reconciliations and often VAT. An accountant prepares year-end accounts and tax returns and advises on tax. Many small businesses use both, or one firm that does both.
How do you check the firms listed here?
Every firm is an active company on Companies House, and we've matched its own website to that record. Firms that claim their listing add services, software and qualifications; we show qualifications as self-reported until we've checked them.
Does it cost anything to use?
No. Searching and contacting firms is free, and we never take a referral fee, so you deal with the firm directly.
How are firms ordered?
Claimed listings come first, then listings by how complete they are, then alphabetically. Nobody can pay to change the order.
